Overview:

Documentation is a key factor in any malpractice lawsuit or licensing board matter. A well-documented record could be the difference between demonstrating your competency as a provider and making a credible case in your defense or losing the case. Overview:
Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is an aggressive epithelial malignancy that is the sixth most common neoplasm in the world today. Despite numerous advances in treatment utilizing the long-term survival has remained ~55%. This poor long-term survival is due to a number of factors including delayed diagnosis and the development of multiple primary tumors. Therefore, the early detection and prevention of all premalignant lesions is critical for the long-term survival of these patients. This session will include ADA's guidelines and recommendations for oral cancer screening. To underscore the importance of dentists’ role in early detection, the session will include selected legal case examples with strategies for dentists to help protect themselves from a liability lawsuit.

Objectives:

Emphasize the role of dental health care professionals in early detection and prevention of oral cancer

Review the commercially available adjunctive screening devices and tests for oral cancer screening

Present the new American Dental Association Clinical Guideline recommendations for oral cancer screening
